Recorded in 1965, Hank Mobley’s Dippin’ features the tenor saxophonist alongside trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Harold Mabern Jr., bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer Billy Higgins. The six track session moves between hard bop, soulful boogaloo, Brazilian influenced rhythms, and lyrical ballads, with Mobley’s warm, fluid tone at the center. Highlights include the funky opener “The Dip,” the driving “The Vamp,” and the understated ballad “I See Your Face Before Me.”
